Hello Football World…
If you’ve actually bothered to click a link on this budding website, you might be a football pennant fan or at least a football fan…hopefully both. I’ve been collecting football pennants for over 20 years, first pretty casually (I think my pennant collection consisted of approximately two pennants for the first ten years) but over the past decade or so I’ve become pretty serious about it.
I love the history of football…NFL and College…and I think pennants are a great way to own a piece of that history. I love the logos, the artwork, colors, the feel, the smell (Hell yeah…I smell my pennants! What about it?), the rarity and the excitement of finding one you didn’t know existed.
Which brings me to this website, which I promise someday will look moderately professional (right now it’s more of a Picasso than a Rembrandt, but we’ll get there). For years I’ve struggled to find information about football pennants. There’s virtually no reference material in existence. No websites devoted to them. No football pennant encyclopedias.
There is a pennant price guide out there, but the football section is sparse and in this day of instant information, any printed price guide is practically obsolete by the time it’s published. Not to mention that some of these pennants come along so infrequently, it’s pointless to try to assign a “book” value. The true value of anything is what someone is willing to pay and you’d be surprised how much a pennant can sell for if it comes around once every ten years and two rabid collectors want it.
Unlike their baseball counterparts, there aren’t nearly as many football pennant collectors out there….which is surprising considering how popular football is in the U.S. now.
All I’ve had to go on for years is past auction sales, futile google searches and my own experiences, as well as those of a small network of my fellow collectors. There is a wealth of knowledge out there, however, almost all of it is stored in the heads of collector’s I know.
So…I felt it was time for this website. I’ll share what I have…and what I know. I’m hardly an expert…but I know a little. Hope you enjoy.
PS…I’ve never created a website. This one went from idea to reality in about three hours this afternoon. So please forgive the amateur look (I prefer to think of it as Cubist…but whatever), poor grammar and typos. I’m late for the gym and don’t have time to clean this up. Have to admit, I don’t really feel like it either. This is supposed to be fun, not Shakespeare (I prefer Hemingway). But I promise, I will get better.
